Q & A with Stacey Alfonso Mills
Where did I grow up?
I was born and grew up on and island called Trinidad and Tobago, which is in the Caribbean. I lived with my mother, my younger sister and younger brother.
Did I have pets when I was a kid?
Oh yes! I got my first pet when I was about 3 years old. She was a tiny white puppy and I named her Dasher. I have no idea why. Later, my sister, brother and I had a cat named Sabrina and another black dog named Cindy. But our favourite pet was a brown dog named Chachi. Chachi was the best of all!
Did I always like writing stories?
I did! I was always writing and reading. My favourite subjects in school were Creative Writing, Poetry, Spelling, Art and Reading. I was pretty creative. I particularly loved the Poetry class because our teacher Mrs. Rudder was often teach this class outside. It made the class seem magical. Robert Louis Stevenson was a favourite of mine back then.
Have I always dreamed of being an author?
As a teenager and into young adulthood I enjoyed writing stories, poems and even short plays so much that it was just fun for me. Although I thought about it from time to time, I never thought that I would actually become an author. In my teens I did a lot of writing. I had several books filled with poetry. My mom even suggested that I should create greeting cards because she really liked my poems. But it wasn’t until I started working in the United States that my writing skills and passion paid off and was soon part of my job. Eventually I worked in the Communications Department for an oil and gas company where writing was an essential part of my job. I loved doing it! But I didn’t actually think of becoming an author until 2008 where an idea for a children’s story book came to me and everything else came together very quickly. After writing and self-publishing my first book in 2009, I realized how much I loved writing and decided to work towards writing full time.
What type of books do I like to read?
I read anything that’s fun, exciting and makes me think!
Do I have a family?
Yes. My husband Julian and I raise our boys Anthony, Mathew and Alexander in Trinidad and Tobago.
Do my kids have pets too?
Oh yes they do. In the past they’ve had 2 hamsters, a cat from the animal shelter and a grey rabbit. Now they have 2 white Labrador Retrievers called Simba and Binx and 2 cats called Hovis and Obe Wan.
